It was a busy spring break week for the Newton County softball and baseball teams.
The Newton County baseball team lost two games last week, falling 9-8 to Taylorsville and 6-0 to Pisgah.
The Lady Cougars played three games on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. They opened with a 9-5 loss to Long Beach before losing 8-0 to South Panola and 18-15 to Ocean Springs on Tuesday.
County baseball
The Cougars got in two games last week and lost both games, falling 9-8 to Taylorsville and 6-0 to Pisgah.
On Tuesday, County committed five errors and walked five as Taylorsville built an early lead and held on to take a 9-8 win. Taylorsville led 6-1 after the third before County scored two in the fourth and four in the fifth to tie the game at 7-7. But Taylorsville scored two in the fifth to take the win. County outhit Taylorsville 9-5 as Camden Thoms was 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Vance Richardson was 3-for-4 with a double while Cooper Johnson and Caleb Potter also doubled. Ethan Burton started and pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up nine runs but only two earned on four hits and four walks while striking out five. Landon Huber pitched the last 4 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit.
On Friday, County lost 6-0 to Pisgah and were outhit 12-3. Pisgah scored three in the first, one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Camden Thoms doubled while Grant Keith and Cooper Johnson each singled. Landon Huber started and pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Braxton Dean, Hayden Townsend and Brady Bounds each pitched for the Cougars.
The Cougars are scheduled to play Stringer in a two-game series. Game 1 will be at Stringer on Tuesday and game 2 at Decatur on Friday. The Cougars will then play at Neshoba on Saturday.
County softball
The Lady Cougars lost two out of three games last week, as the beat Long Beach 9-5 but lost 8-0 to South Panola and 18-15 to Ocean Springs.
On Monday, the Lady Cougars scored in four straight innings to take a 9-5 win over Long Beach. County scored two in the third, fourth and sixth with three in the fifth. County had 14 hits, led by Mary Preston Williams who was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple. Lexi Addy was 3-for-3 with three triples while Adilyn Vaughn was 2-for-4 with two doubles. Hadley Amis was also 2-for-4 for the Lady Cougars. Shae Jimmie started on the mound and pitched two innings and gave up two runs while Landry Brunson pitched the last five innings.
On Tuesday, County lost 8-0 to South Panola. The Lady Tigers scored four in the first and two in the second and third. County had just four hits, all singles. Kolbie Wansley was 2-for-3 while Mary Preston Williams and Gracey Wood each singled. Lexi Stevens pitched all seven innings and gave up eight runs on 11 hits and three walks.
The Lady Cougars finished the week on Tuesday with an 18-15 loss to Ocean Springs. County scored two in the first, five in the second and four in the third and led 11-4 after three. But Ocean Springs scored four in the fourth and seven in the fifth to retake the lead at 15-11. County tied the game in the sixth with four runs while Ocean Springs finished with three in the sixth to take the win. County had 14 hits in the game, led by Shae Jimmie who was 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Gracey Woods was also 4-for-5 while Adilyn Vaughn was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Lexi Addy started and pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs on 10 hits while Landry Brunson pitched 1 1/3 and gave up 10 runs on nine hits. Lexi Stevens pitched the last inning.
Newton County will host Leake Central on Tuesday and make the return trip to Carthage on Thursday. They will then host Hernando and Greene County on Saturday.
