The Newton County Cougars got over the .500 mark in a big way this past week.
The Cougars took a pair of wins last week, beating 20-win Kosciusko 5-0 on Friday and 12-2 on Saturday to sweep the Class 4A second-round playoff series.
Newton County improves to 16-14 on the season and will play the winner of the New Albany and Tishomingo County series. If New Albany wins, game 1 would be on the road and win Tishomingo County wins, game 1 would be in Decatur.
Newton County 5, Kosciusko 0
The Cougars allowed just one hit as they took a shutout win over the Whippets on Friday in the first game of the series.
County scored one in the first, three in the third and one in the fifth.
The Cougars had seven hits in the contest, led by Camden Thoms was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Hayden Amis was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cooper Johnson doubled and scored two runs while Caleb Potter hit a home run.
Ethan Burton was solid on the mound, pitching five hitless innings and giving up three walks while striking out three. Braxton Dean pitched the last two innings and gave up one hit and three walks while striking out four.
Newton County 12, Kosciusko 2
The Cougars took advantage of 10 walks and pulled away to take a six-inning, run-rule win on Saturday to sweep the series.
Newton County led 3-2 after two innings and then scored five in the third, one the fourth and fifth and two in the sixth.
The Cougars had nine hits in the contest as Hayden Amis was 2-for-3 with two walks, a double and three RBIs. Caleb Potter was 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Grant Keith singled, walked twice and scored two runs. Landry Tolbird singled and scored two runs while Camden Thoms also had a double.
Hayden Townsend started on the mound and pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits and struck out two. Brady Bounds pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up two hits and two walks while striking out three.
