The Newton County Academy baseball team got a pair of standout pitching performances in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The Generals got a pair of complete-game performances as they beat River Oaks 6-3 and 6-0.
NCA improves to 14-13 on the season and will take on Lamar Christian. Lamar beat Porter’s Chapel 20-2 and 10-0 in first-round action. The two teams split games in the regular season as Lamar Christian won 6-5 at home and NCA took a 12-2 in Decatur.
NCA 6, River Oaks 3
The Generals got a one-hitter from Cooper Savell and took a three-run win over the Mustangs on Wednesday.
River Oaks scored one in the first while NCA answered with one in the second and four in the fourth and led 5-1. River Oaks scored two in the fifth while NCA added another run in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
NCA had six hits in the contest and took advantage of six walks. Ty Thrash was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Bryce Jones was 2-for-4. Stephen Duke also singled and scored a run while Taylor Burt drew three walks.
Savell was solid on the mound for the Generals, going all six innings and giving up three runs on one hit and six walks while striking out 11.
NCA 6, River Oaks 0
The Generals scored in six of the seven innings and took a shutout win over the Mustangs on Thursday to sweep the playoff series.
NCA scored single runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh.
The Generals had 10 hits as Ty Thrash, Taylor Burt and Cooper Savell each had two hits. Bryce Jones also had a home run and two RBIs while Gxxx Boyd singled, walked twice and scored two runs.
Cooper Thrash also pitched a complete game for the Generals, scattering four hits in seven innings while striking out six.
