A man who allegedly tried to evade a checkpoint Friday was arrested after a pursuit involving numerous officers resulted in the suspect crashing near the intersection of Pete Freeman Road and Erin Lucern Road.
Newton County Sheriff Joedy Pennington said Kelvin Dwayne Slaughter, 40, was arrested and charged with felony fleeing, reckless driving, willful disregard for the safety of persons and property and no insurance.
Pennington said the pursuit began when the driver “recklessly” turned around at a checkpoint on Friday, raising suspicions of officers.
The pursuit covered numerous roads including Hwy. 489, Spring Hill Church Road, Pickney Road, Lake-Conehatta Road, Decatur-Conehatta Road, and others before it ended on Pete Freeman Road near the intersection of Erin Lucern Road.
When asked about why the suspect attempted to avoid the roadblock, the only answer Pennington could come up with was no proof of insurance.
“That’s the only thing we can prove,” Pennington said. “It would have been much easier and cheaper to get a ticket for no insurance.”
