The Union Public School District Board held its regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 7, focusing on policy reviews, financial approvals, and personnel matters.
The meeting began with a call to order, followed by the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. No members of the public spoke during the designated public comment section.
One of the key items discussed was the review of Board Policy Sections E, covering business management, and Section A, which pertains to school district organization. The board also approved the 2024-2025 meeting dates and heard a presentation on fall 2024 revisions from the Mississippi School Boards Association (MSBA).
A transfer request from a student moving from Neshoba to Union was discussed and approved. The board also began discussions about the potential application for the District of Innovation, a move that could allow for greater flexibility in meeting educational goals.
In personnel matters, two new assistant teachers, Amy Bailey Brazzil and Heather Martin, were approved to begin their positions at Union Elementary School starting October 8.
Financial discussions were extensive, with the board reviewing and approving financial statements for September, along with claims dockets covering transactions from #38774 to #38931. Final amendments to the district's combined and combining budgets for fiscal year 2024 were also passed, along with transfers related to loans and the 2025 fiscal year athletic and activity opening cash transfers.
The board unanimously agreed to add grant funds from the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grant and the School Nurse Intervention Grant to the fiscal year 2025 budget. These grants aim to provide additional support for homeless students and school health services.
In other business, the board approved advertising for bids on a hunting and fishing lease for 246 acres of 16th Section land in Neshoba County. The consent agenda, which included enrollment reports, teacher and student attendance, and fundraising requests, was also passed without opposition.
All five board members were present at the meeting: Nicole Harrison (President), Jeremy Hamm (Vice President), Eric Graham (Secretary), Latoya Harrison, and Sommer Warren. Superintendent Tyler Hansford also attended.
The meeting adjourned after comments from the superintendent.
