The Newton Tigers saw their regular season come to an end on Thursday night.
The Tigers fell 32-8 to Richton and finished the regular season with a 2-8 record.
They will face 2A favorite Heidelberg on Friday in the first round of the playoffs.
Newton coach Jeffrey Crosby said his team
“Richton had some good athletes,” Crosby said. “It was a very emotional game. We had a call or two that didn’t go our way and our kids got flustered. It got real chipped after that and the emotions got very high. They had officials arguing with our players. It was not a good situation.”
Richton got the ball to start the game and went 53 yards in seven plays and scored on a 30-yard run after recovering a fumble. The try for two was good and Newton led 8-0 with 8:03 left in the first quarter.
Newton answered with a six-play, 52-yard drive as Jymarques Holder scored on a 5-yard run with 4:54 left in the first quarter. Daishon Moncrief ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8.
Newton fumbled on its next possession after driving into the Richton red zone. Richton then went 91 yards in nine plays and scored on a 50-yard run with 4:22 left in the second quarter. The try for two was good and Richton led 16-8 at the half.
Newton got the ball to start the second half and put together an 11-play drive before turning the ball over on downs at the Richton 18.
The Rebels then went 82 yards in eight plays and scored on a 14-yard quarterback keeper with 1:51 left in the third. The try for two was good and Richton led 24-8.
After a Newton punt, Richton then broke a 52-yard run and converted the try for two to take a 32-8 lead with 10:06 left in the game.
Newton had 113 yards rushing and 45 passing for 162 yards of total offense. Holder had 47 yards on three carries while Tyzavion Townsend had 31 yards rushing on five carries. Townsend was also 3-of-6 passing for 45 yards and one interception.
Jamarion Brown and Jimare Kincaid each had nine tackles apiece. Kavion Davis had six tackles while Townsend and Desmond Stevens each had four tackles. Juvenile Green and Derrick Moore each had three tackles while Holder, Rayshon Bunkley, Odell Williams, Allen Roberts, Jalis Hughes and Jeremiah Johnson each had two tackles.
