The Newton Lady Tigers won’t get to defend their Class 2A title this year.
The Lady Tigers lost a 45-43 stunner to Taylorsville in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs. Newton beat Collins 79-24 on Tuesday to open the playoffs.
The Tigers lost in the opening round to Collins 74-68 to end their season.
The Lady Tigers finish the season with a 19-9 record while the Tigers finish with a 12-16 record.
Newton girls 79, Collins 24
The Lady Tigers dominated in first round action on Tuesday, taking a 55-point win over Collins.
Newton led 19-5 at the end of the first period and then outscored Collins 27-6 in the second to lead 46-11 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Collins 26-5 in the third to lead 72-16 going to the fourth.
Zia Shields led Newton with 26 points while Ja’Leah Hickmon had 19 points. Kania Arrington had 15 points while Cornesha Jones and Anastasia Brown each had eight points apiece.
Taylorsville girls 45, Newton 43
The Lady Tigers built an early lead but couldn’t hold on as the Lady Tartars stormed back in the second half to take the win on Friday.
Newton led 15-8 at the end of the first period and 20-10 at the half. Taylorsville dominated the second half as they outscored Newton 12-9 in the third and 23-14 in the fourth to take the one-point win.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 18 points while Zia Shields had 16 points.
Collins boys 74, Newton 68
Collins pulled away in the middle two periods and held on to take a six-point win over the Tigers on Tuesday to end their season.
Each team scored 22 points in a fast-paced first period but Collins outscored Newton 17-14 in the second period to lead 39-36 at the half. Collins took the third period 16-13 and lead 55-49 going to the fourth where each team scored 19 points.
Kezarrian Wash, Tyreke Snow and Kedrick Osby led Newton with 13 points apiece while Cahden Thompson had seven points. Tayvion Nettles and Justin Thompson each had six points apiece.
