Second-year Lake coach Tate Hanna had plenty to say after his team lost 7-0 to Newton County.
After returning 15 starters and going 8-3 last year, many people considered Lake a favorite in Class 2A.
“First off, we beat them all up and down the field,” Hanna said. “But when you turn the ball over four times, you aren’t going to win any contest. I’m bad disappointed in our upper classmen because that’s who caused the fumbles. I just expected more out of these guys. When you get inside the 5, you have to punch it in. That’s just not us and we didn’t do that last year. All I know is we are further along than we were this time last year.”
Last year, the Hornets used a win over Newton County as a spring board to the season.
“Any time you get a new coach, you know they are going to be fired up and ready to play,” Hanna said. “Anytime you start the year out, you want to be successful and start out the season on a positive note and we didn’t do that tonight.”
The Hornets will take on Pelahatchie, a team they lost to in the last seconds last year.
“It’s going to be a big game,” Hanna said. “They have tons of skilled kids and have a lot of guys returning. We lost to them last year with 17 seconds left in the game, and if we play with the effort we played with tonight, we are going to get our butts blown off the field. We have got to change our mindset, attitude and effort before Friday night. I don’t know how we are going to get back to what we know how to do.”
