It was a good week for the Newton County Academy girls’ basketball team.
Not only did the Lady Generals pull out three wins, including a buzzer beater against Winston Academy, Lilly Hollingsworth scored her 1,000th career point.
NCA took a 55-50 win over Laurel Christian on Tuesday without coach Steve Harber who was out with an illness. Then on Thursday, NCA beat Winston 49-48 on a last-second basket by Cayden Alexander. NCA finished out the week with a solid 41-12 win over Prentiss Christian.
The NCA boys lost three straight last week, falling 63-28 to Laurel, 34-26 to Prentiss and 63-19 to Winston.
NCA will return to action after the Thanksgiving break as they host Lamar School on Tuesday, Nov. 29 and will then play at Prentiss Christian on Thursday, Dec. 1.
NCA girls 55, Laurel Christian 50
Playing without coach Steve Harber who was out with an illness, the Lady Generals needed overtime to beat Laurel Christian.
NCA led 11-9 at the end of the first and then outscored Laurel 21-7 to lead 32-16 at the half.
But Laurel fought back and outscored NCA 20-7 in the third to take a 39-36 lead into the fourth. Laurel then tied the game at 45-45, but NCA outscored Laurel 10-5 in the fourth to take the win.
Lilly Hollingsworth led NCA with 25 points while Cayden Alexander had 11 points and Macie Woodham added 10 points. Emme Reese had 11 rebounds and Addie Bergeron had eight steals.
Laurel Christian boys 63, NCA 28
Noah Agent led NCA with 12 points, as the Generals were outscored in every period.
NCA girls 41, Prentiss 12
The Lady Generals dominated the first half and cruised to a 29-point win.
Macie Woodham led NCA with 12 points while Lilly Hollingsworth had nine points and Cayden Alexander added eight points.
Prentiss boys 34, NCA 26
Prentiss outscored the Generals in three of the four periods and took a tough eight-point win.
Prentiss outscored NCA 8-5 in each the first and second periods to lead 16-10 at the half. NCA outscored Prentiss 9-8 in the third to cut the lead to 24-19 going to the fourth. Prentiss took the final period 10-7 to take the win.
Jackson Bunyard led NCA with 15 points and nine rebounds.
NCA girls 49, Winston 48
The Lady Generals build a double-digit lead and held on to take a one-point win over the Lady Patriots.
NCA led 13-11 at the end of the first and then outscored Winston 19-11 to lead 32-22 at the half. Winston then outscored NCA 12-7 in the third to cut lead to 39-34. Winston actually took the lead in the fourth but the Lady Generals got a steal from Emme Reese and a layup by Cayden Alexander to take the win.
Lilly Hollingsworth led NCA with 16 points while Cayden Alexander had 14 points. Macie Woodham had eight points while Emme Reese had five points and six steals.
Winston boys 63, NCA 19
The Patriots outscored the Generals in every period and took a 44-point win.
