Area kids looking for summer fun need not look any further than their local libraries. The Kemper-Newton Regional Library System is in the middle of its “Adventure Begins at Your Library” summer reading programs.
Throughout June, the three Newton County libraries, located in Union, Decatur, and Newton, are hosting activities and storytimes for kids of all ages on designated days. While the libraries in Newton and Decatur will wrap up their programs at the end of June, Union Public Library will continue its programs through July.
In addition to the activities, the library system is hosting a reading program, where children and adults keep a log of the books they read. At the end of the program, the logs will be collected and entered into a drawing for prizes.
With programs such as scavenger hunts, building tents, and making crafts, KNRLS Director Donna Cleveland said the goal is to encourage reading and help kids find adventure in every aspect of life.
“Our theme is ‘Adventure Begins at Your Library,’ so our first program here in Union was ‘Adventures of Your Library,’ and we taught them where things are. We had a young group for that, and none of them had library cards, so we started fresh with them,” Cleveland said. “We just did ‘Adventures in Your Home,’ where we played minute-to-win-it games with household items and showed them that everyday items can be used in more ways than we normally use them for. We’llwrap up on August 1 with ‘Adventurers of the Park,’ where we’ll meet at the park and do a nature scavenger hunt.”
This week’s scheduled programs include “Adventures in the Sky” at 2 p.m. in Union and “Alcohol Ink Art (Adults and Teens)” at 3 p.m. in Newton on June 20, and “Kaleidoscopes Craft” in Decatur and “Outdoor Adventures (Toddlers)” in Newton, both beginning at 3 p.m. on June 21.
The Newton Public Library also has Reading Hour at 2 p.m. every day, sponsored by the Newton Chamber of Commerce.
