Newton County Academy got a much-needed district win this past week over their rivals from down south.
After a 12-0 shutout loss to Calhoun on Monday, NCA beat rival Sylva Bay 13-9 on Friday.
NCA will return to play this week as they host Sylva Bay on Monday and play at Kemper Academy on Thursday. They will finish out the week on Saturday as they host the Meridian Flyers on Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest.
NCA 13, Sylva Bay 9
The Generals used an early outburst to take lead and never looked back as they took a four-run win over the Saints on Friday in a district contest.
After two scoreless innings, NCA scored six in the third while Sylva Bay answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Sylva Bay cut the score to 6-4 with a run the fifth while each team scored three runs in the sixth to make the score 9-7 going to the seventh. NCA then plated four in the seventh while Sylva Bay scored two for the final margin.
Each team had nine hits while the Generals took advantage of five errors and six hits. Garrett Loper was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs while Stephen Duke was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Landon Smith also doubled and drove in three runs while Micah Garrison walked and Lawson Porter each walked twice and scored two runs.
Smith started on the mound for the Generals and pitched 5 1/3 innings as he gave up four runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out seven to pick up the win. Micah Garrison pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits to pick up the save.
Calhoun 12, NCA 0
The Generals struggled at the plate as the Cougars took a four-inning, run-rule win on Monday.
Calhoun scored two in the first and then erupted for 10 runs in the third to take the win.
Calhoun outhit NCA 6-2 but took advantage of three errors, five walks and four hit batters. Landon Smith and Lawson Porter had NCA’s only hits.
Porter started on the mound and pitched two innings and gave up eight runs on four hits and three walks while Stephen Duke pitched one inning and gave up four runs on two hits and two walks.
