The Newton County Academy baseball team only picked up one win last week but it was an important one.
The Generals took an 8-7 win over Sylva Bay on Tuesday but dropped a 4-3 decision to Kemper Academy on Thursday.
The Generals ended up as the No. 4 seed in district play after three teams finished with identical district records.
NCA will finish out the regular season as they host Lamar Christian on Tuesday and will make the return trip on Friday. NCA will be the No. 4 seed out of district play and will take on Greenville Christian in first-round action next week.
NCA 8, Sylva Bay 7
The Generals took an early lead and held off the Saints in the seventh to take a one-run win on Tuesday in district play.
Sylva Bay scored two in the first and second and led 4-0 before NCA scored four in the bottom of the second to tie the game. NCA then added two in the third and one in the fifth to go ahead 7-4. After a scoreless sixth inning, Sylva Bay scored two runs in the seventh inning to close the gap to one run.
NCA outhit Sylva Bay 8-6 in the contest. Jackson Bunyard had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored while Lawson Reeves was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Stephen Duke also doubled and scored run while Hunter Scarbrough scored two runs.
Leyton Porter started on the mound and pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on two hits and four walks. Reeves pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief and got the win as he gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three. Duke got the save as he pitched the last inning and struck out one.
Kemper Academy 4, NCA 3
The Rams got a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh to take a win over the Generals in district play on Thursday.
Kemper opened with three runs in the second inning while NCA answered with single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Kemper then scored in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Kemper outhit NCA 9-7 in the contest. Micah Garrison was 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Generals while Landon Smith doubled.
Smith started on the mound and pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out six.
