It was a good week for the Newton County Academy basketball teams.
Both NCA teams swept through a pair of district games last week. The Lady Generals beat Calhoun Academy 52-8 and Kemper Academy 52-25. The Generals also cruised as they beat Calhoun 57-22 and Kemper 61-45.
The Lady Generals continue their strong play as they improve to 18-7 on the season and 4-0 in district play. The Generals improve to 11-13 on the season and are also 4-0 in district play.
NCA will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to rival Sylva Bay. A sweep on Tuesday gives both NCA teams the No. 1 seed heading into next week’s district tournament which will be hosted by Kemper Academy. NCA will finish the regular season on Friday as they travel to Calhoun.
NCA boys 57, Calhoun Academy 22
The Generals dominated the first half and took an easy 35-point win over the Cougars in Tuesday in district play.
The Generals dominated the first half of play as they outscored Calhoun 24-2 in the first and 21-3 in the second for a 45-5 halftime lead. With a running clock in the second half, Calhoun outscored NCA 8-5 in the third and 9-7 in the fourth.
Micheal Lee Buffington and Colby Hollingsworth each had 11 points apiece while Jackson Bunyard had 10 points.
NCA girls 52, Calhoun Academy 8
The Lady Generals had little trouble with the Lady Cougars as they cruised to a 44-point win.
NCA dominated the first period as they outscored Calhoun 20-2 in both the first and second periods to lead 40-4 at the half. With a running clock in the second half, NCA outscored Calhoun 7-4 in the third and 5-0 in the fourth.
Cayden Alexander led NCA with 17 points while Lilly Hollingsworth had 15 points.
NCA boys 61, Kemper Academy 45
The Generals overcame a first-period deficit and pulled away to take a 16-point win over the Rams on Thursday.
Kemper led early and outscored NCA 12-8 in the first period. The Generals got rolling in the second period and outscored Kemper 25-13 to take a 33-25 lead at the half. NCA extended that lead in the third period as they outscored Kemper 19-12 to take a 52-37 lead into the fourth. NCA took the fourth period 9-8 for the final margin.
Lawson Reeves led NCA with 17 points and six rebounds while Braxton Kelly had 12 points. Jace Harris had nine points and 13 rebounds while Ty Hollingsworth had nine points.
NCA girls 52, Kemper Academy 25
The Lady Generals outscored the Lady Rams in every period and pulled away to take a 27-point win.
NCA led 10-4 at the end of the first and outscored Kemper 12-4 in the second to lead 22-8 at the half. NCA continued to extend its lead in the second half as they outscored Kemper 13-11 in the third and 17-6 in the fourth to take the win.
Belle Hollingsworth led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points while Lilly Hollingsworth had 11 points. Emme Reese had nine points while Cayden Alexander had seven points.
