After a rough week of Division 5-4A basketball, Newton County took the short trip to Sebastopol on Saturday and came away with a pair of wins.
The Lady Cougars lost a pair of close 5-4A games last week, falling 64-61 to Northeast Jones and 45-42 to Quitman. They rebounded on Saturday and came from behind to take a 66-54 win over Sebastopol.
The Cougars lost 67-55 to Northeast and 75-22 to Quitman but also bounced back on Saturday to take a 64-55 overtime win over the Bobcats.
Newton County has just one game scheduled this week as they will travel to Mendenhall on Tuesday. The following week, they will travel to Richland on Tuesday and to Quitman on Friday.
County girls 66, Sebastopol 54
The Lady Cougars finished strong and overcame a first-half deficit to pull away and take a 12-point win over the Lady Bobcats on Saturday.
Newton County led 14-13 at the end of the first while Sebastopol outscored the Lady Cougars 20-18 in the second to take a 33-32 lead into the half. County started to take control in the second half as they outscored Sebastopol 13-10 in the third and 21-11 in the fourth to take the win.
Remini Nickey and Malice Williams each had 17 points apiece to lead the Lady Cougar while Hannah McDougle had 11 points. Shallasa Jimmie had eight points while Ariel Hurst and Tally Nickey each had six points apiece.
Kylee Madden led Sebastopol with 25 points while Alana Gunn had 13 points.
County boys 64, Sebastopol 55
The Cougars needed overtime but pulled away late to take a nine-point win over the Bobcats on Saturday.
Sebastopol jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the first period and led 29-25 at the half. The Bobcats extended the lead in the third as they outscored the Cougars 11-8 in the third to take a 40-33 lead into the fourth. But Newton County outscored Sebastopol 18-11 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. The Cougars then outscored the Bobcats 13-4 in the extra period to take the win.
Zarius Johnson led Newton County with 15 points while Kyren Wansley had 14 points and Keaton Gray added 12 points.
Jacob Williams led Sebastopol with 22 points while Keon Triplett had 11 points. Kenyon White had seven points while Luke McGarrity had six points.
NE Jones girls 64, County 61
The Lady Cougars put up a furious fourth-period rally but fell short in a three-point loss to the Lady Tigers.
Northeast led 19-13 at the end of the first and 30-19 at the half. Northeast extended the lead in the third period, outscoring County 23-15 to take a 53-34 lead into the fourth. County then outscored Northeast 27-11 in the fourth but fell short of the win.
Hannah McDougle had a big game with 26 points to lead the Lady Cougars while Malice Williams had 14 points and Remini Nickey added 10 points.
NE Jones boys 67, County 55
The Tigers outscored the Cougars in every period and gradually pulled away to take a 12-point win in division play.
Northeast led 12-11 at the end of the first and 29-24 at the half. Northeast gradually extended its lead as they outscored County 17-14 in the third and 21-17 in the fourth.
Dresen King led County with 13 points while Keaton Gray had 11 points and Xay Clark chipped in seven.
Quitman girls 45, County 42
The Lady Cougars weren’t able to hold onto an early lead as the Lady Panthers took a three-point win in division play.
Newton County led 9-6 at the end of the first but Quitman took the second period 17-15 as the Lady Cougars led 24-23 at the half. Quitman then outscored County 10-6 in the third to take a 33-30 lead into the fourth where each team scored 12 points apiece.
Remini Nickey and Hannah McDougle each had 10 points apiece while Shallesa Jimmie had nine points and Malice Williams had eight points.
Quitman boys 75, Newton County 22
The highly regarded Panthers flexed their muscles and took a 53-point win over the Cougars.
Quitman led 19-9 at the end of the first but outscored County 20-0 in the second to lead 39-9 at the half. Quitman continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring County 18-7 in the third and 18-6 in the fourth.
Dresen King led County with six points.
