Two area football players were selected to play in the annual Bernard Blackwell North-South All-Star football game.
Newton’s Tyreke Snow and Sebastopol’s Luke Winstead were both selected to play in the game which features some of the state’s most talented players.
Snow, who has started at Newton since he was an eighth grader, was in consideration for a spot on the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game.
“It’s a big honor for him,” Newton coach Zack Grady said. “We thought he had a chance to play in the big game, but there are so many things that factor into making that game. I felt like there isn’t a better athlete in the state of Mississippi. The Bernard Blackwell is always a good game, and there are a lot of college coaches at that game. He will be able to showcase his talents there and hopefully his recruiting will pick up.”
Joining Snow will be Winstead, who starts at right tackle for the Bobcats.
“It’s a big deal to make the all-star game,” Sebastopol coach Keith Brown said. “If you look at the offensive line, there are a lot of 4A, 5A and 6A players there. You don’t see a lot of 1A players. But he’s really excited for the opportunity to get to play against some of the best players in the state. We are really proud of him.”
Newton County coach Bobby Bass will also coach in the game as the defensive coordinator for the South squad.
The Bernard Blackwell game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18 at Milner Stadium at Gulfport High School.
