Golfers, veterans and residents alike are encouraged to mark their calendars for this Saturday as the American Legion Post 89 will be hosting a benefit golf tournament at Decatur Country Club to raise funds for restoration of the historic Legion Hut on Highway 15.
The tournament, a 2-person scramble, is open to all golfers of all skill levels, with the goal of being fun, community-wide event to support a good cause. Member of Post 89 will be on hand cooking up fresh barbecue plates for golfers, spectators and passerby, with plates ready to sell starting at noon.
Johnny Reeves, commanding officer of Post 89, said they are shooting for at least 100 golfers to come out and participate. However, he said, non-golfers are welcome as well.
“Anyone is invited to come by and get a barbecue plate,” he said. “Even if they don’t golf, just come on out and learn about the Legion.”
The morning tee time is set to kick off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Reeves said, and if more golfers are signed up, an afternoon tee time can be added. If golfers sign up, he said, they’ll get to play.
“We’ll go into the night if we have to,” he said.
Golfers can preregister for the event by calling Reeves at 601-635-2178 or sign up Saturday morning. The cost to register is $30. Barbecue plates will cost $7.
The American Legion Post 89 Hut, built in the 1930s, is one of the oldest Legion Huts in the United States. Reeves said he hopes all residents will consider participating in Saturday’s event to ensure the historic building remains available for veterans and the community for years to come.
