A man accused of shooting three individuals during a dice game on Thursday, Dec. 27, turned himself into police last week.
Moses Montrez Oliphant turned himself in at the Newton Police Station around 10:30 a.m. Jan. 2. He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling. Information regarding his bond was not immediately available.
Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry thanked the suspect for coming forward and turning himself in peacefully.
“I’d like to thank Mr. Oliphant for fully cooperating with police,” Curry said. “I’d also like to thank the Newton County Sheriff’s Office for their support of the Newton Police Department during the investigation.”
The Newton Police Department received a 911 call stating the three individuals had been shot at a home in the 300 block of Scanlan Street shortly after 11 p.m. Dec. 27. The incident was caused by an escalated argument over a dice game. Curry said the shooting was believed to be an isolated incident, and he did not believe the public was in danger.
