Bedford Care Center of Newton hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting on its new specialized memory care unit.
The Courtyard at Bedford Care Center of Newton is dedicated to providing for the unique and special needs of older adults who are dealing with memory impairment.
Pam Fulton, marketing director of Bedford of Newton, said the wing is designed specifically for seniors who are battling Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.
“It is a 16-bed secure unit within our facility to assist those who are dealing with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia,” Fulton said. “We have daily activities for the residents in this unit just like the rest of our facility, but it’s a much quieter and more controlled area than the general population.”
The area was designed to be more like home, including laminate hardwood floors, companion resident living rooms with adjoining bathrooms, common living room and kitchen areas and an enclosed courtyard with walking path and manicured landscaping.
“It a much more home-like atmosphere,” Fulton said. “It’s a lot less stressful on those patients who are dealing with dementia. It’s a much quieter environment. Studies have shown that people who have Alzheimer’s or dementia do much better in a smaller setting. We’ve designed it to help them be able to cope with their surroundings.”
