Mississippi State University fans are about to get a treat as the Newton County chapter of the Mississippi Alumni Association will host John Cohen, athletic director for MSU, for a night of socializing, food and fun Thursday, Feb. 7.
Beginning at 6 p.m. in East Central Community College’s Mabry Cafeteria Gold Room, guests will have the opportunity to take pictures with Cohen, enjoy a meal provided by the ECCC catering staff and hear from the man leading the bulldogs in athletics.
Additionally, guests will have the chance to participate in a silent auction for all sorts of Mississippi State University memorabilia.
Joshua Yeager, president of the Newton County MSU Alumni Association, said having Cohen come to Newton County is a dream come true for Bulldog fans throughout the region.
“Right now, athletically, all our major sports are competing at a high level, so who else would be better than Mr. Cohen himself to come speak with us,” he said.
Of course, Cohen’s appearance is also a great thing for the alumni association. Only a few months old, Yeager said the fledgling group of dedicated MSU alumni wanted to do something big to let people know about their group. Having the former baseball coach turned athletic director come to speak definitely qualifies, he said.
““Mississippi State Athletics has been phenomenal in their efforts to improve our university and be public with Mississippi State in itself,” he said. “The impact of athletics on many people’s lives go un-profound as far as the being the best that they can be, and that’s what we’re trying to do with the alumni association. We’re trying to make it the best that we can.”
A chance to meet John Cohen is sure to be something no bulldog fan will want to miss. However, Yeager said, seating in the Gold Room is limited to about 200 people. Those who want to attend will want to get their tickets as soon as possible.
“We have seating capacity for 200 and we surely hope to fill that,” he said.
Tickets for the event cost $25 and will be available Dec. 1. To purchase a ticket, contact Thomas Howard at The Newton County Appeal in Union, Charlotte Griffin at Southern Pine Electric in Newton or by contacting the Newton County Mississippi State Alumni Association via Facebook or Twitter.
Additionally, Yeager said, all members of the alumni association will be able to take ticket orders. If all else fails, he said, find the nearest Bulldog.
“We’re here to support our university and make Newton County the greatest place for alumni to come and fellowship and have a great time,” he said.
