Steve Buckley said Saturday night was a “But God” moment in the history of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce.
“The real reason I’m here tonight is not to talk about Haiti,” Buckley said. “I’m not here to talk about Jonestown. I was here to tonight to make an announcement, and really, it’s a ‘but God’ announcement. I’m here to announce the citizen of the year, and it’s a ‘But God’ because who’d ever thunk it.”
After the long introduction, businessowner Wayne Comans was announced as the Decatur Citizen of the Year Saturday at the East Central Community College Cafeteria. As Buckley said, Comans has been in Decatur “around a thousand years” and is one of the most giving people in town and would give the shirt off of his back.
“I was wondering when I got here tonight why all of my family was here,” Comans said. “This is truly amazing. I couldn’t be anything without first God and then my family.
“I love my town. I always have. It’s made us a good living. I just hope that we can always be able give back a part. And we thank God for everything.”
