Students at Union Middle School were evacuated after a small fire in the computer lab ignited shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Union Fire Chief Dale Yates said one of the computers heated up and ignited the paper blinds covering the computer lab windows. The fire, he said, was small and quickly contained.
“They had it out by the time we got here,” he said. “They put it out with a fire extinguisher.”
Superintendent Tyler Hansford said no one was hurt by the flames and very little damage occurred to the school building.
“If you have to have a fire, this is the best possible scenario,” he said.
Hansford said residue from the fire extinguisher actually caused more of a mess than the fire itself. After seeing the classroom for himself, he said he had contacted ServePro, a professional cleaning service, to get the room back in order.
Students were treated to a field day Tuesday as school officials worked to clean up debris and ensure the building was safe to hold class. All classes resumed normal schedules on Wednesday.
