A Philadelphia woman has been charged with trying to obtain personal identity information of elderly residents at the Newton Congregate.
According to Police Chief Harvey Curry, Danyell McAfee notified police after 7 p.m. Jan. 16 Mrs. Danyell Mcafee identified herself as the wanted individual pertaining to the identity theft that targeted the elderly community at Congregate.
“Mrs. McAfee has been 100 percent cooperative with us and maintains that there is a misunderstanding,” Curry said. “Although there are numerous components to this case, as it remains under an investigation. It is imperative for the community to note that her arrest does not indicate her guilt but only that probable cause exist for the case to be turned over to a grand jury.”
Mcafee was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with 12 counts of personal identity information, obtaining for unlawful use. She was released from the Newton County Jail on $40,000 bond.
Curry said there were 12 names attributed to this case. While the charge is for obtaining personal identity information, Curry said the charge is not an incident of typical identity theft, where someone uses a person’s information to steal but that the information was obtained with the intent of using it for personal gain.
“We are personally approaching every individual to notify them of their possible victimization,” Curry said. “Meanwhile if you believe that you or your family members have been a part of this scam, we urge you to report it to the Newton Police Department at 601-683-2041.”
