More than 50 people packed into the courtroom at the Newton County Courthouse Friday to see Hon. Robert Logan sworn in as 2nd District Chancery Clerk Judge. Logan, who ran unopposed for the seat in the Nov. 6 general election, said he was honored to have been chosen.
Administering the oath of office was Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court Bill Walker. Walkers, a personal friend of Logan, said the two had attended law school at the University of Mississippi and they remain close friends today. He said Logan was always one of his stops when he came through the Newton.
“Robert is a guy with over 40 years of experience, and that’s important,” he said. “You want someone seasoned, who has worked with clients.”
As Chief Justice, Walker said he always ends letters with “Thank you for your contribution to the fair and independent administration of justice.” Logan, he said, is a living example of that sentiment.
Addressing the crowd, Logan said there were many he would like to thank, Newton County residents who voted for him, his family for supporting him and the Chancery Court staff for helping him prepare to take over as judge. However, he said the group he would most like to thank is other attorneys in Newton County for not running against him.
“If you had had a choice, I’m not sure I’d be here,” he said, laughing.
As Chancery Court judge, Logan promised to do the best he could every day on the bench. He said he would seek justice, listen to both sides of the issue and support residents as best he could.
“Every job I have, I want to do it a little bit better,” he said. “That’s not to say there was anything wrong with the way it was being done before, but I want to do it better.”
Logan said he would pay particular attention to the young people of Newton County. Young people are the future, he said, and he challenged those in attendance to strive to support local youth in their own careers as well.
