The historic McElroy-Hoye House will be opening to the public in June, completing a lengthy renovation and restoration of the historic home in downtown Newton.
Dot Turnage of the Newton Historical Cultural Commission said they are planning to have a formal grand opening for the house tentatively for June 21. Currently, they are putting the finishing touches on the historic home, which will be a museum for the community’s history.
The commission obtained the house in 2002 from Newton First Baptist Church and later relocated the house from the church property to its current home across the street from Newton First Baptist.
Turnage said they are currently moving in furniture appropriate to the historical period of the structure. According to a story by Turnage and Harold Graham, the house will be used for educational purposes, receptions and cultural events.
Some of the pieces inside the house come from the era of the house’s construction.
