The Rev. Bruce Taylor has released his first book, a devotional entitled “That Still Small Voice: Hearing the Voice of God in the Commonplace.”
Taylor, who is a retired Methodist minister and a Decatur native, said he has been working on this project for the last two decades.
“Many people have told me that I needed tow write a book,” Taylor said. “It’s a collection of written reflections that I’ve written over the years, but I really spent a lot of time over the last three to six months putting it all together.”
While some may sit down and read the book in one sitting, Taylor intended the book to be read as a devotional, where you may take a chapter or two at a time and then reflect on what each passage meant to the reader.
Each of the devotions was a “rumination” of Taylor, many of which would later become sermons that he would preach. However, very rarely did Taylor ever have many written notes of his sermons.
“It was a good exercise in discipline for me to put my thoughts down on paper,” Taylor said.
Taylor said his inspirations would come from multiple sources from people, places and things to going through the loss of his parents and his experiences with Hurricane Katrina.
“Starting at East Central Community College in a botany class, I became an observer of life,” Taylor said. “I began to look at everything through the lens of my life and to think about it theologically and ask ‘What is God trying to tell me?’ God is everywhere in common everyday life, but we have to be willing to stop and listen.
“When we hear the voice of God in the commonplace, we become increasingly aware of God’s constant presence in our lives,” Taylor added. “My hope is that the book causes you to take time and reflect. Think about these things in theologically.”
Taylor’s book is available locally at Wheeler’s Drug Store or can be ordered through Amazon.com. The book can also be purchased by contacting Taylor directly at his home or through his Facebook profile.
