Audiences will delight in the dark, yet hilarious, antics of some of the most iconic childhood characters come to life as Newton Theatre Company’s production of “The Addams Family” opens this weekend at Roxy Theatre.
“‘The Addams Family’ is every father’s worst nightmare,” Director Julie Rowzee said. The original story follows the beautiful but sadistic Wednesday Addams, who despite embracing the gothic lifestyle of her family, has fallen in love with a kind, young man from a respected family. As Wednesday, herself, struggles with the turbulent emotions of love and commitment, the rest of the Addams are also forced to ask themselves, “Can the Addams family be normal?”
“It’s been a fun production, there’s a lot of morbid humor,” Rowzee said. “It’s been a lot of work; the music is really tough. It’s been a lot of work for the musicians and the actors, but they’re very talented.”
Join Newton Theatre Company’s talented cast as they showcase the plight of Gomez Addams, as he struggles to keep a secret from his wife Morticia, who believes complete honesty is the only way to keep passion alive. Follow Pugsley Addams, who, tortured by his sister for years, is suddenly faced with the thought of never being impaled, stretched or shot with a crossbow ever again.
Trey Harris, who plays both a caveman and “Thing” in “The Addams Family,” said the whole cast loves the script and the music. He said the show has been a blast to learn and audiences are sure to find it just as funny as the cast does.
“I think everybody is pretty excited about,” he said. “The show is going to be hilarious. All of us cast members, we know exactly what’s going to be said, but we still can’t stop ourselves from laughing at it.”
Plus, Harris said, there’s no better way to celebrate Halloween than a play about one of the most well-known monster families.
“I think anybody who comes is going to get their money’s worth,” he said. “They’re really going to get a good show.”
“The Addams Family” opens Saturday with performances at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 22, and 2 p.m. Sept 16 and 23. Tickets, which cost $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under, can be purchased from Kaleideoscopes, Dezignz by Nikki, BankFirst in Newton or by calling 601-621-0033.
Join the Addams family as they test the strength of the family bond and show that everyone deserves love, whether they’re alive, dead or as Gomez said in the case of Lurch, “undecided.”
