Newton voters in Ward 4 will be heading back to the polls on June 22 to decide who will be their alderman after Ramonica Evans and David Carr received enough votes for a runoff after the June 1 special election.
When the votes were counted on Friday, Evans was leading with 35 votes followed by Carr with 22 votes. Terry Arrd just missed the runoff with 20 votes.
Jessie Snow finished with 12 votes while Franceania Moncrief, who previously said she had withdrawn from the race, received one vote. These unofficial results didn’t include one affidavit vote, which was counted at a later time but had no bearing on the outcome of the election.
While Evans received the most votes, she only received 38.9 percent of the 90 votes cast in the election. For one to win without the need of a runoff, a candidate must receive more than 50 percent of the vote.
The runoff election is set for June 22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Newton Senior Citizens Center. Evans and Carr are vying for the vacancy left by former alderman Ray Payne, who was killed tragically in a car crash on April 17.
