Newton Police are investigating a shooting last week that has left a 40-year-old man in the hospital and a 19-year-old man in jail.
Newton Chief of Police Harvey Curry said Christopher Johnson, 21, of Pine Street was arrested last week and charged with aggravated assault. He is currently in the Newton County Jail after his bond was denied by a Justice Court judge.
Curry said the suspect was already facing other charges at the time of the arrest.
The incident occurred on May 8 in the evening on Pine Street. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
“The suspect got into a confrontation with the victim, and the suspect shot him,” Curry said. “We’re still trying to figure out what exactly caused the incident.”
The victim was Uturo Donald, 40, of Newton. Curry said Donald was still in at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
“He’s presently alive, but I do not know his exact condition,” Curry said.
