Local families are grieving the loss of a 47-year-old Newton man after he was tragically killed in a car crash last week.
Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry said Joseph Thomas Reed, 47, of Sixth Street in Newton was killed in a single vehicle crash around 6:15 p.m. on April 30. The victim was driving an Oldsmobile Alero when it struck a tree on Sixth Avenue, the street on which Reed lived.
Curry said the victim was thrown from the vehicle from the impact of the crash. Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker pronounced the victim dead on the scene, suffering blunt force trauma.
A visitation for Reed was held on Friday at Mapp Funeral Home. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Grove Baptist Church in Forest. Pastor is R. Wright.
