On April 13, Newton High School’s Career Association competed for the first time at the Career Development Conference held in Jackson. Newton High School’s Career Association is affiliated with the Jobs for
Mississippi Graduates Program (JMG). This program is a school base program which focuses on students overcoming barriers to graduation and preparing
students to become college and career ready. It is designed to help students achieve success. During the conference, students competed with students from various school districts across the state. The competition areas included: Employability Skills, Financial Literacy, Math Skills, Project Based Learning, Entrepreneurship, Public Speaking and Words in the Workplace. Also, students were able to participate in the election and voting process for state
officers.
Newton High School’s Career Association was successful in a couple of areas and placed in those events. Jamal Hillie placed second in the Financial Literacy Competition, Diamond Jones placed third in the Math Skills
Competition, Ivauna Jones won a Chairman’s Award for her hard work and accomplishments and Zaheim Bender was elected to state office as the Public
Relation Officer. As the Public Relation’s Officer, Zaheim will become the face of Jobs for Mississippi Graduates for this term. He will serve as the voice and keep others informed of JMG’s endeavors.
Katherine Windham, job specialist for JMG and Newton High School’s Career Association sponsor, stated that she is honored to teach and work with such a
remarkable group students. She said that the students worked hard and it showed. She is elated at the student’s accomplishments and feel they will obtain greater success in the future.
