Newton residents, students and volunteers weathered the steady rain to make their city beautiful during the city-wide Clean Up Day Saturday.
Sporting fluorescent yellow and orange vests, Newton High School cheerleaders, football players, members of the Mayor’s Youth Council and volunteers from Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church splashed through the streets picking up plastic bottles, candy wrappers and fast food containers, depositing them in large, black trash bags.
At City Hall, City Clerk Charlene Evans, who supervised the Clean Up Day, busied herself with a camp stove and packages of hotdogs, a reward for the volunteers’ hard work.
“I think it went great,” she said. “We had a little moisture, but we got it done.”
Evans said the volunteers did a great job picking up the trash and the city was looking a lot nicer.
“We had a lot of support from the school, and Pleasant Grove Church came out to help us,” she said.
Although she did not know the exact amount of trash collected, Evans said she was happy with the way the event turned out, despite the rain, and appreciated the volunteers who came to help.
