Newton County residents are invited to come out and support veterans Sunday at the Newton Veterans Day program in downtown Newton.
Henry Gruno, with the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery, which is putting on the event, said the event is sure to be both educational and interesting for all residents.
“It’s just a celebration of our veterans,” he said.
Gruno said many different organizations have worked to bring the Veterans Day celebration together, and there will be a lot going on for residents to see.
“We’ll have about a 30-minute presentation, with local mayors speaking,” he said. “We’ll have the colors posted by NAS Meridian.
After the presentation, the group will observe the ringing of the bells to commemorate World War I, Gruno said. Currently, he said he is planning on a flyover by local Air Force jets but said that was dependent on the weather the day of the event.
The Veterans Day celebration is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. Sunday in downtown Newton, “between 3rd and 4th streets,” Gruno said. The event is free and open to the public and he said he hopes all county residents will consider attending to show support for the local men and women who serve or have served in the military.
