Newton Police and the Kansas City Southern Railway Corporation are investigating a train collision in which a black female was killed late last month.
Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry identified the woman as Renee Smith, 38.
Doniele Carlson, assistant vice president of corporate communications and community affairs for Kansas City Southern, said that on Aug. 25 at approximately 12:15 p.m., a westbound KCS train in Newton struck and fatally injured the victim walking down the single main line track.
“The whistle had been sounded for three crossings prior and continued in an effort to alert the person walking on the track,” Carlson said. “There were no injuries to the train crew. The incident is under investigation.”
