Newton County Academy will be well represented this week in the MAIS postseason all-star games.
The Generals placed four players in the Class 1A All-Star game. Making the team from NCA Andrew Boothe, Amos Castillo, Cooper Savell and Taylor Burt.
Savell capped off a brilliant career for the Generals where he rushed for 2,098 yards on 184 carries with 33 touchdowns after rushing for 1,322 yards on 162 carries as a junior. He finished his career with 3,561yards rushing, 996 yards receiving and 177 passing for 4,734 yards in his three-year career. On defense, Savell finished with 196 tackles for his career.
Savell will be joined by his running mate on offense, Taylor Burt, who finished with 1,166 yards rushing and 448 yards passing for 1,614 yards of total offense.
Joining Savell and Burt will be offensive linemen Andrew Boothe and Amos Castillo, who helped the Generals amass 3,733 yards rushing and 4,318 yards of total offense.
Castillo also led the Generals with 61 tackles this season while Burt had 60 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss.
Junior Ethan Woodham, who played on the offensive line and defensive line, will be participating in the MAIS Futures game. The Futures game features players from all MAIS classifications and schools all the way from Jackson Prep down to 8-man schools NCA, Desoto and Humphreys. He was one of just three 8-man players selected to play in the game.
“I have nominated kids before for the game, but they didn’t get picked,” NCA coach Stevie Nelson said. “But Ethan got picked this year. I think he will be fine. He will go over there and compete and get after it.”
Woodham had 42 tackles this past season and helped anchor the offensive line for the Generals.
The Class A All-Star game will be held on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mississippi College. The Futures game will be held at 6:30 p.m. The Class 2A-3A all-star game will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. at Mississippi College and the Class 4A all-star game will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
