It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
You can see it driving down the streets. Newton, Decatur and Union all have their streetlight decorations up. Christmas trees are popping up in stores and homes across Newton County.

Even the weather feels a little more like Christmas with temperatures near freezing in the morning and seeing some frost on our cars in the morning.
After getting stuffed from turkey and dressing and all the fixings, it’s time to turn our attention toward Christmas to celebrate the birth of our Savior. And there are plenty of ways to get in the Christmas spirit over the next 10 days.
It started yesterday as Union and Newton held tree lighting ceremonies.
Union also has story time in downtown Union tonight, a movie night in the park on Thursday and the announcement of it best-decorated yards and businesses on Friday. Saturday, the Union’s Christmas program and parade will line up at 5 p.m. with the parade coming through town at 6 p.m. Be sure to support the businesses during Moonlight Madness.
On Sunday, Union First Baptist Church will have a live nativity.
Newton has plenty of things going on too. They will have a Christmas Giveaway for any shoppers who do business on Thursday or Friday. You could win as much as $100! Winners will be announced on Monday
A week from Sunday, Newton United Methodist Church will have its drive-through nativity on Sunday. This is one of the best and long-lived events that has been happening for a long time. It’s an event that is really suited for the pandemic, as you don’t have to get out of your car. Just ride through and see the story of Christ.
Decatur businesses are also preparing for the holidays. The same is true in Hickory. Hickory Pick’N held its Christmas Open House this past weekend.
As we are trying to get through this holiday season safe from the pandemic, I do want to encourage you to support our local businesses as much as you can. There things you can’t get anywhere else than at our Newton County businesses. You never know what you might find for a friend or loved one.
If you can’t find it, maybe get a gift card or gift certificate for them instead. I’m sure our local businesses wouldn’t mind the support.
Join us in helping kick off the season. Let’s all stay happy and healthy this season, but don’t forget the reason for the season.
