It never felt like we would do this, but somehow we did. We made it through the COVID-19 high school football season of 2020.
For the most part, our teams remained unscathed. Unfortunately, Lake and Newton County Academy had to forfeit a couple of games due to a coronavirus outbreak. The other four schools managed to get through the schedule in good shape.
In the case of Newton, Newton County, Union and Sebastopol, none of them were the reason why they might have missed a game in the regular season. Several of their opponents saw outbreaks, but these four schools have done a good job avoiding it as much as possible. (Knock on wood.)
These four teams are now playing in the playoffs. The playoffs begin for the Cougars, Tigers and Yellowjackets this week, and Sebastopol will see where they land in the playoffs after their final games this week.
I’ve been lucky to see a lot of success in football. We’ve seen Union make a run to the third round of the playoffs. Newton County Academy has been a mainstay in the playoffs, although they had a rebuilding year this year.
Lake has had a lot of success as well making a deep playoff run five years ago.
Newton nearly pulled off a huge upset of No. 1 seeded Winona in the first round of the playoffs three years ago.
Last year, Newton County made an incredible run to the state quarterfinals before falling in overtime.
I feel good about all four of our teams having a shot to make a deep run.
We’d like to congratulate all of our teams on a good season, and we’d like to wish you good luck as you move into to the playoffs.
