The Newton County Academy baseball team saw its season come to an end last week but not without a fight.
The Generals opened up their second-round series with Lamar Christian with a 4-3 win. But Lamar Christian took the second game 6-0 before taking the final game 11-10 to take the series win.
The Generals end the season with a 15-15 record.
NCA 4, Lamar Christian 3
The Generals overcame an early deficit and took a one-run win over the Lions on Monday.
Lamar Christian scored three runs in the top of the first while NCA answered with one in the second to cut the score to 3-1. The score stayed there until the bottom of the sixth. In the sixth, NCA loaded the bases and got a double from Cooper Savell to tie the game at 3-3. The Generals took the lead when Gaines Boyd stole home to take the lead.
NCA had six hits as Savell was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Logan Usry singled and scored twice while Max Ferguson singled and scored. Boyd also walked twice and scored a run while Taylor Burt also singled.
Steven Duke pitched all seven innings for the Generals and gave up three unearned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Lamar Christian 6, NCA 0
The Generals had just three hits as the Lions took a shutout win in game 2 of the series.
Lamar scored two in the first and second and added one in the third and fifth on nine hits.
NCA had three hits as Cooper Thrash was 2-for-3 while Gaines Boyd also singled.
Cooper Savell pitched all six innings and took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four.
Lamar Christian 11, NCA 10
The two teams exchanged big innings as the Generals rallied from two different deficits but eventually lost a one-run contest to the Lions to see their season come to an end in the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
Lamar scored six runs in the bottom of the first while NCA scored four in the top of the second. Lamar Christian answered with four in the bottom of the third to take a 10-4 lead. NCA then scored five runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-9. NCA tied the game with a single run in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Lamar then scored on a two-out single to take the lead at 11-10. NCA got one on in the top of the seventh but weren’t able to tie the game as the Lions took the series win.
NCA had nine hits and nine walks but committed five errors. Cooper Thrash was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and two RBIs while Steven Duke and Logan Usry were each 2-for-3. Taylor Burt also doubled and drove in two runs while Gaines Boyd and Bryce Jones each scored two runs apiece.
Ty Thrash started on the mound and got just two hits and gave up five runs on three hits. Cooper Thrash pitched the next 5 1/3 innings in relief and gave up six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six.
