Newton County only had one matchup on the schedule last week and came away with a pair of wins.
The Lady Cougars beat Scott Central 41-11 while the Cougars came away with a 56-45 win.
Newton County will play at Kemper County on Monday and then be off until Monday, Dec. 29 when they play at The Neshoba Central Tournament. County will return from the Christmas break and play at Leake Central on Jan. 6 and will host Choctaw Central on Jan. 8 and then Enterprise on Jan. 9
Newton County boys 56, Scott Central 45
The Cougars used a big second period to take an 11-point win over the Rebels in their only action last week.
Scott Central led 13-10 at the end of the first period before the Newton County outscored the Rebels 24-6 in the second period to lead 34-19 at the half. Scott Central then outscored County 14-9 in the third period to cut the lead to 43-33 going to the fourth. The Cougars then outscored the Rebels 13-2 in the fourth to take the win.
Lorenzoe Gardner led County with 17 points while Christian Lampkin had 10 points.
Newton County coach Chance Young said his young squad is gaining confidence as the season goes on.
“Our district is going to be really tough again this year,” Young said. “We are really young but fighting through some of that and gaining experience and confidence as the season progresses. We’ve started to figure out our identity as a team so that’s really important too.”

The Lady Cougars improved to 7-2 on the season as they took a 30-point win over the Lady Rebels last week.
