The Newton County Lady Cougars pounded two South 4A opponents last week as they advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals.
The Lady Cougars beat Raymond 56-28 on Monday and then beat Columbia 50-38 on Friday.
The Newton County boys lost their opening-round game, falling 65-52 to Mendenhall.
The Lady Cougars advance to third-round action as they will travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and take on Moss Point, who was a 42-37 winner over Northeast Lauderdale.
Newton County 56, Raymond 28
The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Rangers in every period as they doubled them up to take a 28-point win on Monday in opening-round action.
County led 14-9 at the end of the first and then outscored Raymond 13-4 in the second period to lead 27-13 at the half. Newton County continued to add to its lead as the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Rangers 9-5 in the third and 20-10 in the fourth.
Felicia King led Newton County with 21 points while Nalayah Phillips had 19 points and Dazlie Tubby added 16 points.
Newton County girls 50, Columbia 38
The Lady Cougars pulled away lea and took a 12-point win over the Lady Wildcats on Friday.
Columbia led 13-11 at the end of the first period before County took the second period 11-8 to take a 22-21 lead at the half. Each team scored seven points in the third period while County got in gear in the fourth period and outscored Columbia 21-9 to take the win.
Felicia King led a balanced scoring attack for Newton County with 15 points while Dazlie Tubby had 11 points. Nalayah Phillips had 10 points while Shae Jimmie scored seven points.
Mendenhall boys 65, Newton County 52
The Cougars fell behind early but battled back only to fall late to the Tigers.
Mendenhall jumped out to a 23-9 lead in the first period, but County bounced back and outscored the Tigers 19-9 to cut the lead to 32-28 at the half. Mendenhall then outscored County 14-13 to extend the lead to 46-41 going to the fourth. The Tigers pulled away as they outscored the Cougars 19-11 to take the win.
Jayce Beal led Newton County with 16 points while Brayson Jefferson had nine points. Davion Roberts also chipped in eight points for the Cougars.
