Newton County Sheriff’s Department isn’t trying to be a stick in the mud, but deputies are asking students at East Central Community College to stop pulling pranks around town.
Chief Deputy Kris Hollingsworth said a group of East Central students’ prank went too far last Wednesday, resulting in a large amount of residents’ property being destroyed.
“Every year it’s the same thing,” he said. “Pranks, egging houses. It’s gotten carried away.”
Hollingsworth said about 13 arrests are planned in connection to Wednesday’s escapade, most of which will be misdemeanor charges.
The Sheriff’s Department isn’t trying to point fingers or cast blame on anyone, Hollingsworth emphasized, and deputies want students at the college to enjoy their time in Newton County. However, he said there is a line and students have crossed it.
By letting the community know what’s been happening, Hollingsworth said he hopes residents, students and parents will help hold each other accountable and keep each other from crossing that line from fun to criminal activity.
“We’re just trying to deter it from happening,” he said.
