The Following school districts have announced closings due to the threat of severe weather today:
• (NEW 11:20 A.M.) Union Public School District Superintendent Tyler Hansford confirmed that school will be releasing at 1:45 p.m. Officials will be releasing a statement shortly.
• The Newton County School District will be having Early Release due to the threat of severe weather today. Buses will load at NCES beginning at 1:30 today. Here is the official statement:
• Newton Municipal School District will be releasing at 1:45 p.m. School Superintendent Glenda Nickson released the following statement: "After speaking with emergency management and the superintendent from Newton County concerning straight line winds scheduled to come through Newton between 2-4 prior to the severe weather conditions tonight, all events for tonight has been cancelled, and for the safety of our students we will release school following our Wednesday early release schedule at 1:45. This time will not have to be made up. All parents, the local TV station and newspaper has been notified of the early dismissal. Please call if you have any questions or concerns."
• Lake School will dismiss today at 2:30 due to inclement weather.
• STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State University’s Starkville and Meridian campuses will close today [Dec. 16] at 2 p.m. due to an abundance of caution over predicted severe weather. The National Weather Service is predicting severe weather with potentially dangerous conditions for Central Mississippi. Non-essential employees may leave at 2 p.m. Faculty, staff and students are urged to use caution to ensure personal safety. Essential personnel required to work during the closing will be notified by their supervisor. The Longest Student Health Center will be open until 5 p.m. with reduced operations.
