Several hundred high school and college students from Newton and Scott counties gathered at East Central Community College’s Bailey Stadium to celebrate the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Fields of Faith.
FCA’s Fields of Faith is structured as a student-to-student ministry. Peers invite their own classmates and teammates to meet on their school’s athletic field to hear fellow students share their testimonies, challenge them to read the Bible and to come to faith in Jesus Christ.
Speakers for the event included Newton County’s Marilyn Tullos, Newton County Academy’s Kemp Aldermen, East Central Community College president Billy Stewart and Warrior football coach Ken Karcher.
Aldermen said that he tries to share his faith on whatever team he’s on, whether it’s a school team or a travel team. Because many times they are playing on Sundays, he said their team gathers for devotions before they play any games that day. He shared advice on not letting sports become too much of an emphasis on life.
“Sports are only temporary, but salvation is for eternity,” Alderman said.
Karcher shared his message about the four words, one lie and two questions found in Genesis 1-3. He also shared his journey to a deeper walk with Christ.
At the conclusion of the student speakers and praise and worship time, the students were invited to come down on the field and spend time with the student leaders in prayer and devotion to help inspire them to become leaders in their schools or make a decision to follow Christ for the first time.
The event was sponsored by East Central Mississippi Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was coordinated by local director for Newton, Scott and Smith counties, Scott Engle.
