Memorial Day celebrations Monday were a bit different as many parades and large-scale gatherings were prohibited under coronavirus restrictions.
In Newton County, however, local leaders did not let the virus stop them from paying tribute to the service men and women who died defending their freedoms.
In a virtual Memorial Day ceremony Monday morning at the American Legion Hut Post 89 in Decatur, Post 89 commander and Newton County Veterans Services officer Johnny Reeves, Rep. Randy Rushing, R-Decatur, and Sen. Tyler McCaughn, R-Newton, spoke briefly about keeping true to the spirit of Memorial Day by taking time to remember those who died for America’s freedoms.
“Today is all about the selflessness and the sacrifice of American heroes who raised their right hands to say, ‘It is I who will defend America, and if needed, lay down my life for my country,” Reeves said. “That debt has been paid time and time again in the name of all Americans so that we may continue to enjoy lifes most treasured moments each and every day.”
