Turkey Creek Water Park is back up and running after a bout with blue algae caused park staff to temporarily shut down the lake as a precautionary measure.
Park Manager Pam Engle said she took a sample of the lake water to Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality last Monday to confirm the lake was clear.
“We’re not seeing any new algae blooms,” she said, Thursday. “As of today, the lake is back open for fishing, boating, skiing and tubing.”
Engle said the beach will remained closed for the season.
Turkey Creek staff previously made the decision to stop water recreation at Turkey Creek after blue algae was discovered in the lake Aug. 20. At the time, Engle said the closure was not mandated by MDEQ but park staff chose to take the extra precaution while they worked to kill off the algae.
According to MDEQ, blue algae can release toxins harmful to humans and animals. Exposure can cause rashes, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. However, no reports of illness were received in connection with Turkey Creek.
