The Newton Police Department has arrested a man in connection with a shooting incident near the intersection South Main Street and First Street on July 4.
JaFabeon Jamal McBride was arrested July 19 and charged with aggravated assault. He is being held in the Newton County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.
Originally, Newton Police Chief Harvey Curry said the incident happened in the Purple Magnolia parking lot, but he clarified the location in a press release sent Monday to say the incident happened at the old Newton hospital parking lot, across the street from the business.
“Upon arrival, officers indicated that there were three victims,” Curry said in a statement. “Two were treated on the scene. The third was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.”
One of the victims, Darrian Moore, suffered an injury to his leg and was treated in the hospital.
Curry said three rifles were recovered following the arrest and have been submitted to the crime lab for forensics testing. Additionally, police officials previously said that the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency was asked to determine if the incident was a shooting or if it involved an explosive device.
“The incident remains under investigation, and more arrests are expected to follow,” Curry added.
