The City of Newton will receive a $208,800 grant for repairs and improve safety at the James H. Easom Airport.
Ron Davis, airport manager for the city, said they will repave about 300 square yards of apron where airplanes are parked at the airport. They will also be clearing tree obstructions from around the airport to improve safety of airplanes flying into the airport. No expansion of the airport is included with the grant.
“The apron has a couple of sunk-in places that could damage airplanes taxiing to the runway,” Davis said. “This will help smooth that out and make it better for plans to park out there.”
Davis also said they are planning to remove some trees at the edge of the airport property. This has been talked about for a while, but he said they haven’t been able to start on it because they were waiting for the area to dry out.
He anticipates letting a bid on the project in July. If there is any money remaining, Davis said they will look at repairing some fencing around the airport.
