More than 100 people came out to help give Newton a facelift November 16 during the Newton citywide cleanup.
Alderwoman Linda Wash said she was pleased to see so many people come out and help their community.
“It was a great turnout,” Wash said. “We had well over 100 volunteers. We’d especially like to thank the Newton Municipal School District for their support of the cleanup. We had student volunteers out here from the Beta Club, cheerleaders, athletic teams and more. Everyone helped make this a very successful cleanup.”
Fred Snow, public works director, said the city collected over 100 bags of trash during a short two-hour window from 9 to 11 a.m. Areas where volunteers went included down Main Street, Church Street, Hwy. 15, Hwy. 80, around the I-20 interchange areas around town.
Wash said they hope to continue these cleanups in the future, possibly trying to extend the hours of the cleanup to be able to reach larger areas of town.
“We’d love to do an all-day cleanup, but we are happy that we got as much done as we could,” Wash said. “We hope that this inspires our residents to continue the cleanup efforts around town.
“You don’t have to do much. Just do your best to pick up around your area of town. Every little bit helps.”
The next citywide cleanup will be scheduled in the spring time. No date has been set at this time.
