Another bout of rain and storms flooded roads and downed trees throughout Mississippi Saturday, but Newton County escaped much of the devastation.
Emergency Management Director Brian Taylor said several roads were flooded over the weekend due to the rain.
“There were several roads in Newton County that flood over anytime we have substantial rain,” he said. “I think we had eight roads that we had water over Saturday into Sunday.”
Of those eight roads, Taylor said water had receded from most of them, with only a few still submerged Monday afternoon. Additionally, he said several trees had been felled when water washed away the soil round the roots.
However, Taylor said, the county escaped much of the damage seen in other parts of the state. No houses were flooded, and no cars were washed away, he said. Most importantly, he added, there were no reports of injuries due to the storms.
In Sebastopol, rain overwhelmed the town’s drainage system causing flash flooding in low-lying areas of town. By Monday, the water had drained, and flooded roads were clear.
Town Clerk Michelle Anderson said she was not in town over the weekend but had not heard of any lasting damage from the storms.
Calls to Sebastopol Mayor Greg McGarrity were not returned by press time.
