More than a dozen Newton residents came out to Hope Missions Saturday, Dec. 22, to take part in the organization’s Toy Giveaway and get some last-minute Christmas shopping done.
Marlene Pugh, who organized the event said the Toy Giveaway featured a wide variety of toys and gifts for local children.
“We have remote control cars, videogames, the what do you call it, Guitar Hero,” She said. “We have some nice stuff.”
Pugh said residents were given 10 minutes to look through the selection of toys and games, picking out what they wanted before returning to their seats. Each person was allowed to get one gift for each child.
However, Pugh said, after the 10 minutes were up, the clock would reset, allowing resident to go back to get a second gift.
All told, 62 children received three or more toys at the Toy Giveaway.
Although the Christmas season is over, Pugh said Hope Mission is already planning another giveaway, this one for school uniforms.
Hope Missions had previously held one school uniform giveaway in the fall, prior to the start of the school year, however Pugh said she decided to add a second event. Children often outgrow clothes or wear through them by Christmas break, she said.
“They may be worn out,” she said. “If they have four outfits, they may have holes in them from all that washing.”
That event will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. January 6 in the Hope Missions Newton event room.
