Seven families are without homes after an early morning blaze destroyed several structures and damaged others at Union Apartments Monday.
Dale Yates, fire chief for Union Volunteer Fire Department, said UFD received a call of a structure fire at 3:06 a.m. Arriving on scene, firefighters found one building already engulfed and several others in danger of catching fire.
“Union, Beulah Hubbard, Greenfield and Countyline fire departments responded,” Yates said via email. “The building was heavily damaged with four apartments destroyed and four with water and smoke damage. Seven families displaced.”
While fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze, community organizations rallied to find shelter, clothes and food for their displaced neighbors. In a Facebook post Monday, Hope Missions of Mississippi, which operates House of Hope in Union, said the organization was standing by to provide food, clothing and possibly housing.
Additionally, Yates said the Red Cross of Mississippi had been at the fire and was working to help affected families.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but is being investigated by the state Fire Marshal Office.
